British Values
Expectations for pupils and staff
At Highfurlong we encourage and support all students to have:
- An understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process
- An understanding that the freedom to choose and hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law
- An understanding of the importance of identifying and combating discrimination
Promoting through the curriculum
At Highfurlong we take a holistic approach to delivering British values to our students. This means that the core values of British values are embedded throughout the curriculum subjects in a way which is suitable for all students. We acknowledge that all areas of the curriculum provide opportunity for students and teachers to explore and discuss British values and what this means in the wider community and wider life.
Embedding British Values across the school
We utilise our PSHE (Personal, Social and health education) sessions to address and promote British values. These sessions provide us with allocated time to discuss democracy, discrimination, freedom, tolerance, government, law and religion. It also gives us time to discuss how we challenge opinions and behaviours that are contrary to fundamental British values. We also utilise weekly assemblies to focus on British values as a whole school. We have a British Values displayed in the main corridor across school.
